With default settings, Microsoft Edge displays a Bing search box, your top sites or frequently visited websites, and suggested content on the new tab page.
If you are not happy with what you see on the new tab page of Edge, you can change the default settings of Edge to see what you like to see on the new tab page.
Unfortunately, unlike Firefox and Chrome, you cannot heavily customize the new tab page of Ede as there is no extension as such available for Edge yet. You cannot change Edge’s new tab page background image or make Edge display news from your favorite news website.
On Edge, all you can do is control what kind of suggested content is shown on the new tab page. For instance, you can configure the Edge to show news about sports, money, and autos only. As said, you cannot choose the source from where the news is displayed.
In addition to suggested content or news, Edge’s new tab page displays information cards. Information cards are nothing but large tiles on the right-side of the new tab page with quick information.
The weather information card displays current weather information, for instance. As of writing this article, Edge offers sports, weather, and money information cards, and you can enable or disable any of them under new tab page settings.
Customizing the new tab page in Edge browser
In this guide, we will see how to customize the new tab page of Edge in Windows 10.
Step 1: Open the new tab page of Edge using Ctrl + T hotkey. Alternatively, you can click the plus sign which appears at the end of the last tab.
Step 2: Click the Gear icon located upper-right of the page to open new tab page settings.
If you are getting a blank page instead, click Show top sites or Show top sides and my feed link to see the Gear icon.
Step 3: As you can see, here, you can configure the new tab to display either suggested content and top sites, only top sites, or a blank page.
In addition to that, you can choose news topics to show as suggested content. To select a topic, simply click on a tile. You can either select all of them or only topics that interest you.
If you want to turn on or off any information cards, you can do so here.
Finally, you can select your region/language to show news from that region only. For instance, if you choose Ireland, the new tab page will show suggested news/content from Ireland region only.
Click the Save button.
Lastly, there is no option to remove the Bing search box from the new tab page of Edge.
An awkward bug with Firefox is that it at times, the browser repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows out of the blue. If it happens excessively, you might need to close and restart Firefox, however, in case you restore the previous session, all those empty tabs reopen again. So let us see how you can stop Firefox from opening new tabs when clicking a link.
Stop Firefox from opening new tabs
The cause of this bug is that the user might have chosen Firefox as the default program for certain actions like opening applications or emails as a result of a process in the system. Even if that process (eg. a third-party application) is running in the background, it might trigger Firefox tabs or windows to open.
While we can always close the redundant tabs and windows, it doesn’t solve the actual problem, which would keep reoccurring.
Try the following solutions one by one to resolve the issue:
1] Check for malware
While the above steps should solve the issue, some virus and malware are scripted to keep causing the issue no matter how hard you try to fix it. Thus, if nothing else works, please scan your system for virus and malware.
2] Start a new Firefox session
Whenever Firefox crashes unexpectedly, the previous sessions are restored when we restart the browser. If we kill the process when it was rapidly opening new tabs and windows, the browser would probably open all those surplus tabs when we restart it.
Depending on how the process was killed earlier, Firefox may or may not ask before restoring the sessions. If it does, we could choose to start a new session and if it does not, we could try to close Firefox normally.
However, this might not always be helpful. At times, we might not be able to close Firefox without killing the process and even if we start it normally once, it doesn’t help with the root of the problem. The issue is likely to reoccur.
3] Refresh Firefox
You could refresh Firefox and see. It restores the settings of the browser to factory default.
4] Changing the action for a content type
Since the issue is that the opening of new tabs and windows on Firefox is triggered by certain content in the system, by finding the content type that uses Firefox and changing the action, we might be able to resolve the issue.
- Click on the menu icon on the top-right corner of the screen and select Options.
- Scroll to the Applications section in the General tab. This shows a list of application and how Firefox responds to them. If you know the specific content type which is causing the issue, change its action to Always Ask.
- Should it be a long list, confusing enough of which content action to change, type the words “Use Firefox” in the Search bar. It will show all the content types for which the action is set to “Use Firefox.” Then, you could change the action for the problematic content.
- Repeat the same step after typing “Preview in Firefox” in the search bar.
- Close the about:preferences tab and it will save the changes.
Does this help?
4] Reset actions for all content types
As mentioned in the cause, we know that that the issue is with a problematic content. While we tried to change the action of problematic content in the previous step to ask before implementing the action, users might not always be able to figure out the problematic content. Furthermore, simply changing the action might not always help the cause.
Thus, we might need to manually delete the file which stores the settings.
- Click on the menu icon in the top-right corner of the browser followed by Help and the Troubleshooting Information.
- In the list under the Application Basics section, you would find the Profile Folder. Please click on Open folder.
- Close Firefox and then delete the file named handlers.json.
Restart the Firefox browser and it should solve the issue.

Most browsers have a default page that displays when you open a new tab. If you don’t want your browser deciding what webpage you see when you open a new tab, you can change it to a custom webpage of your choosing.
For example, Chrome and Firefox like to show you tiles of webpages you’ve visited recently and Chrome also shows trending stories. Internet Explorer wants you to see MSN every time you open a new tab. You get the idea.
We’ll show you how to open a new tab to a specific webpage you want to see in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari. Because we like to use Google to search the web, and that’s what we often do on a new tab, we’ll set Google Advanced Search as the URL that opens on a new tab in our examples for each of these browsers. You can set your new tab page URL to anything you want. We’ll also show you how to go back to the default new tab page in each browser, should you decide to.
Google Chrome
Google Chrome does not have a built-in way to specify the URL that displays when you open a new tab, so we need to install an extension. The simplest one we found that works well is Replace New Tab Page.
Go to the extension’s page and click “Add to Chrome” to install it.
Then, click on the Replace New Tab Page button that’s added to the toolbar and select “Options” from the dropdown menu.
Enter the URL for the webpage you want to display on the New Tab page in the edit box and click “Save”.
The next time you open a new tab…
…a dialog box displays asking if this is the new tab page you were expecting. If it is, click “Keep changes”. If you don’t want the changes, click “Restore settings”. The webpage still opens on a new tab, but the Replace New Tab Page is disabled, so next time you open a new tab, it will open the default New Tab page.
To manually go back to the default New Tab page in Chrome, disable the extension by going to the Chrome menu and selecting More tools > Extensions and unchecking the “Enable” box to the right of the Replace New Tab Page extension. You can also remove the extension completely by clicking the trash can icon.
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Firefox has a built-in way to specify a URL for new tabs. However, it’s not in the standard settings—it’s in the Configuration Editor. To access the Configuration Editor, type
about:config
in the address bar and press Enter.A page displays saying this might void your warranty and changing any of these advanced settings can be harmful to Firefox. Don’t worry. We’re only going to change one setting that we tested and found to work fine. If you don’t want to see this warning every time you open the Configuration Editor (
about:config
page), uncheck the “Show this warning next time”. Click “I’ll be careful, I promise!” to continue. On the about:config page, type
browser.newtab
in the Search box at the top of the tab. Results that match what you typed are listed. Double-click on the “browser.newtab.url” item.On the Enter String Value dialog box, enter the URL in the box for the page you want to display when opening a new tab and click “OK”.
Now, when you open a new tab, the page you specified displays.
To go back to using the default New Tab page in Firefox, follow the above steps, but enter the default value, about:newtab, in the box on the Enter string value dialog box.
Internet Explorer

How To Stop New Tabs From Opening In Firefox
Internet Explorer includes a way to specify a URL to display when you open a new tab, but it’s not quite as direct as in Firefox. Basically, Internet Explorer uses the first homepage URL set to open on a tab when you open the browser as the URL for a new tab. So, to change this, click the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the browser window and select “Internet options”.
The Internet Options dialog box displays. In the Home page section of the General tab, make sure the first URL, or the only URL, listed in the box is the URL you want to use for new tabs. Then, click the “Tabs” button in the Tabs section.
On the Tabbed Browsing Settings dialog box, select “Your first home page” from the dropdown list under “When a new tab is opened, open”, and then click “OK”.
You are returned to the Internet Options dialog box, so, click “OK” to close it.
Now, when you open a new tab, Internet Explorer will open the first (or only) home page URL you specified on the new tab.
To go back to using the default New Tab page in Internet Explorer, follow the above steps, but select “The new tab page” from the dropdown list under “When a new tab is opened, open” on the Tabbed Browsing Settings dialog box.
Opera
Just like Chrome, Opera does not have a built-in way to specify a URL to open when you open a new tab. But, there is an extension, called Custom New Tab Page, that allows you to specify a page to display when you open a new tab. Go to the extension’s page and click “Add to Opera” to install it.
Once the extension is installed, click the Opera Menu and go to Extensions > Manage extensions.
Click the “Options” button on the Custom New Tab Page box.
Enter the URL for the webpage you want displayed when you open a new tab in Opera and click “OK”.
Once you set the URL for new tabs, Opera automatically opens a new tab to that page.
To go back to the default New Tab page in Opera, disable the extension by going back to the Extensions page and clicking the “Disable” button on the Custom New Tab Page box. You can also remove the extension by clicking the “X” button that displays in the upper-right corner of the Custom New Tab Page box.
Safari
If you’re using Safari on a Mac, there is a way to set a specific URL to open when you create a new tab. But, you have to use the same URL for both your homepage and the page that displays when you create a new tab. To set your homepage and new tab page, open Safari and select “Preferences” from the Safari menu.
On the General screen, enter the URL you want to use as your homepage, and on new tabs, in the “Homepage” box.
Then, select “Homepage” from the New tabs open with dropdown list and click the red close button in the upper-left corner of the Preferences dialog box.
Now, when you create a new tab in Safari, your homepage will open on it.
To go back to using the default New Tab page in Safari, follow the above steps, but select “Favorites” from the New tabs open with dropdown list on the General page on the Preferences dialog box.
You may be wondering why we left out Microsoft Edge. Unfortunately, you cannot select a specific URL to open on a new tab and there are no extensions to do this either. You can only choose to display top sites and suggested content, just top sites, or a blank page by going to the More menu, selecting Settings, and selecting one of these options from the “Open new tabs with” dropdown list on the Settings pane. Hopefully Microsoft will add this feature in the future.
